ABAC 3.9.1 -- Academic Advisement
Academic advising at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College aids in the educational and career goals of its students. Based on a philosophy of shared responsibility between advisee and advisor, ABAC stresses self-advocacy and independence in its advising process. Students work very closely with their academic advisor to assess, evaluate, and create academic and career goals that best reflect the student’s abilities and aspirations. Using both prescriptive and developmental advising approaches, ABAC advisors guide their students through their degree plans while also further evaluating their career objectives.
Academic advising is a component of the annual faculty evaluation conducted by the department head or dean and is therefore a consideration in promotion and tenure decisions. In addition to the department head or dean, Academic Support Counselors provide training and guidance to enable faculty to advise successfully. The Advising Handbook, available on the Academic Support webpage, is a valuable resource for faculty advisors. The Handbook is updated each academic year; therefore, faculty should consult it often to be certain they are following current policies and procedures in advising.
